“Sepalcure’s combination of love for bass and 90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two week collaboration between Machinedrum and Praveen. Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics. Future lovestep.”

Looking forward to the full release from these guys soon.

After several months of planning and assembly I’m pleased to announce the release of Capsule 01, a collection of art from some of my favourite international image makers and the first in a series of Multilink related print projects…

Let me begin by making it clear that the Capsule series is in no way intended as a replacement for the online magazine (which is still due to return in the near future), serving instead as a physical extension with it’s own functionality and agenda in line with the nature of the format. To explain a little further…

Since publishing the first digital issue of Multilink Magazine people have often enquired about a print version and expressed an interest in getting their hands on the featured artwork in a more tangible format. There’s a number of reasons why the magazine has always made more sense to me in a digital format both in terms of production and distribution as well as the flexibility needed to accommodate the diversity of what’s been featured in each issue. That’s not to say I don’t fully appreciate the desire to interact with content away from the computer sometimes. There’s so much to soak up online that it’s often hard to really give things the level of attention they deserve and regardless of what quality monitor you use it never really feels the same as leafing through well printed pages on a nice weighty paper stock.

Multilink Magazine has always been a purposely chaotic mixture of people and ideas across as wide a variety of disciplines as possible. The idea is to celebrate the diversity of creativity while at the same time trying to highlight the common fundamentals involved. This has meant issues of various sizes are released at irregular intervals, one of many logistical considerations that alongside the fluid nature of the content in each issue really doesn’t sit too well with the kind of unavoidable financial model required to produce and distribute a project in print.

Capsule has been conceived as a high quality and collectible series of art books and prints that span the same diversity of visual culture found in the free online magazine without the editorial. Many of the same principles remain in place such as the variety of content and desire to elevate some incredible talents, generally operating beneath the popular radar. But where the online magazine is a platform for all kinds of creative endeavours, these books and prints provide a more focussed catalog of art and illustration. High production standards have been a key consideration and considering what we’ve achieved with the magazine in it’s ‘virtual’ environment I’ve been keen to ensure that the physical quality of the end product justifies the move to a manufactured format. On a similar note, I’m happy to say that we’ve kept tightly in line with all FSC standards, using environmentally sound inks and paper from well managed forests and other sources. It was essential from the start to try and make the books as affordable as possible and collectible over time forming a much larger resource and archive. With that in mind they all feature an extra durable PUR binding to ensure you won’t find pages starting to drop out over the coming years. You can also open them up nice and wide too without worrying about any disturbing cracking sounds from the spine.

So enough introduction from me, follow the link below (or in the left hand menu) to see more details of who’s in the first volume. It’s currently available direct via our new online shop and will soon be joined by some initial limited prints from this volume and a handful of other non-Capsule related items that will also appear here on the blog in the coming weeks.

If you’re having any problems with the order process or have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to drop me an email via the address on the info page or via the contact page on the shop.

A new online issue of Multilink Magazine is incoming too I promise so please do keep checking back.

Kevin Foakes was a big influence of mine towards the end of the 90’s although it wasn’t until a few years later that I joined the dots together and realised how many of my favorite things he’d been involved in.

Under the Strictly Kev pseudonym, Foakes was part of the original DJ Food line up alongside Patrick Carpenter (PC) and Coldcut’s Matt Black and Jonathan More. A friend of mine picked up Refried Food sometime in 97 and it was following up on the remixers there that led me to the likes of Autechre, Fila Brazillia, Luke Vibert and Mathew Herbert. Shortly after, I discovered the Blech II mix that he and PC had put together, which for me still stands as one of the best examples of what you can make of a mixtape (look at that tracklist!).

Alongside the music and DJing, Foakes has delivered some seriously tasteful artwork as graphic designer at Ninja Tune. Over the years, he’s created a visual profile that only long term realtionships like this or The Designers Republic & Warp seem to yield.

I recommend you spend some time exploring the history of projects on his site. If you’re into digging for good stuff you may have missed, the connections to be found there are certainly worthy of investigation.

“The application of diagrams extends beyond its classical field of use today. Data Flow charts this development, introduces the expansive scope of innovatively designed diagrams and presents an abundant range of possibilities in visualising data and information. These range from chart-like diagrams such as bar, plot, line diagrams and spider charts, graph-based diagrams including line, matrix, process flow, and molecular diagrams to extremely complex three-dimensional diagrams. Data Flow is an up-to-date survey providing cutting-edge aesthetics and inspirational solutions for designers, and at the same time unlocks a new field of visual codes…”

I posted a bit of info here back in December about extended multilink family member Iloobia’s collaboration with Studio Rarekwai on their book RackGaki. Since then he’s dropped by and filled me in on some other recent projects.

There’s been another three projects with the Rarekwai guys; contributing sticker designs for their forthcoming sticker book, editing a 20 minute documentary about HIV/AIDS in kenya as well as editing and post production for an hour long Dubstep documentary due for Japanese DVD release later this year.

He also showed me a short film he’s completed for Ninja Tune artist Max & Harvey’s track ‘Thieves’ from the forthcoming Big Amoeba Sounds album (keep an eye out for this, the album is amazing).

Next up is a documentary co-directed with Brighton writer and philosopher Neil Cantwell about music and religion in Japan which is due to start filing in April.

You can view an animation reel of past projects via the holding page for his new website. If you like what you see, please read on here and help us out…

www.iloobia.com

…he also has an entry in e4’s annual competition to produce stings for their channel. Having made it to the final stage where 28 finalists face a public vote, you can check it out here (it’s the one called Chicken Shaman) and show your support by helping him win. Voting ends at noon on the 29th Feb.

Hydro 74 is Joshua M Smith, a real visual force to be reckoned with. It’s not easy to carve out anything resembling a truly original style in regards to vector illustration but this guy seems to hit the nail on the head every time. A constant source of inspiration, his type treatments are some of the best reference material for logo design I’ve seen in a while. Interview/showcase in the upcoming issue maybe?

We ran an article about these guys and their film ‘Scratching The Surface: Japan’ back in Feb 2005 as part of the first pdf issue we put together. Having shaken off their old ‘Kwai Lo’ guise, the two main guys behind the project moved to new HQ in London where they’ve been busy producing some tasteful work under the new alias of ‘Studio Rarekwai‘. May 2007 saw the release of their book ‘RackGaki’; an eye popping showcase of Japanese graffiti that comes bundled with a stunning DVD produced in collaboration with Cinema Iloobia (another name that may be familiar to long time multilink readers). Check the trailer below…

Iloobia has passed me an article on filming this that I’ve put aside for the new issue early next year but you might want to think about picking up the DVD/book now as it’s been around for a while. Available from Laurence King Publishing in all good book stores…
